Increasing Student Engagement in STEM Studies through VR Technology
The
VRCIM Laboratory is working with the
WSU Center to Bridge
the Digital Divide to identify opportunities to develop a prototype that demonstrates the
scientific and educational feasibility of a curriculum module set
based on virtual reality (VR) technology to engage undergraduate
students in the study of science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics (STEM). It is expected that experience with the immersive
qualities of VR technology will foster greater student interest in
STEM studies. This will provide a unique opportunity for
collaboration on research, teaching, and
dissemination. The results of the prototype will be of great interest
and use to a large and diverse number of students enrolled in
different types of institutions such as four year colleges, two-year
colleges, historically disadvantaged populations, high schools, and
international education institutions. The results of the project will
contribute to the knowledge base of approaches to make STEM degree
tracks more interesting and accessible to undergraduate students
wherein a technology, often applied in entertainment such as science
fiction and video games, is studied through an experiential learning
curriculum.
